BRITAIN is one of the botanically best-explored countries in the world, and its plant life has been well described both from the floristic and ecological points of view. There are few species, however, which can be regarded as having originated in Britain, thereby having a claim to be described as endemic. Most of our native plants are widely distributed in Europe and even beyond the European mainland, and the recognition of this fact leads to an inquiry into the origin and geographical relationships of our native flora. Examined from this point of view, the flora of the British Isles can be classified into a number of more or less distinct geographical elements, and although considerable overlapping occurs, some of these elements may represent distinct migrations both in space and time. The complex and interrelated factors which have contributed to these migrations have operated over a long period of time, and the historical record provides little information. The origin of our flora involves an examination not only of the present-day distribution of British plants but also of their occurrences in pre-historic times. This book attempts to bring together these several aspects of plant life in Britain.
