There are a number of classical textbooks on plant physiology and fewer on plant biochemistry. This book is the first which attempts to integrate the two fields so that the physiological problems are approached with a biochemical and biophysical perspective. It introduces the student, who is presumed to have some knowledge of the basic physical sciences, to the problems of plant metabolism; it elucidates and summarizes the principles of both plant physiology and plant biochemistry.

The first section gives an account of the present knowledge of plant metabolism. This commences with a discussion of cellular structure and develops the theme of metabolic processes at the cellular level, including respiration, photosynthesis, and the general features of biological synthesis of large molecules. In the second section those plant processes are discussed which concern the plant as a whole. These include the movement of water and organic substances through the whole plant and the growth and differentiation of the mature plant.

The author's aim has been to present a coherent picture of his subject which will form a sound basis for the preparation of further study from original papers.
