Since the publication of the first edition of this book, previously entitled Quantitative and Dynamic Ecology, there has been a tremendous increase of interest in the study of plant ecology as a whole and in particular of classification and ordination of vegetational samples or units. As a result the original chapter on classification and ordination methods has been extensively revised and developed as two separate chapters. Throughout the emphasis is towards an understanding of the principles involved rather than an attempt at explaining the mathematical complexities.

Two other developments in plant ecology, population studies, and computer methods are also well established areas of ecology necessitating a numerical approach. The former has been a gradual development over the past ten years and forms a new chapter. The latter development has been more explosive and has also necessitated a chapter on computer methods. This again is not intended as a detailed introduction of programming method but an attempt at a general outline of some of the more powerful features of the present generation computer. A new chapter is included which covers the principles of computer simulation but avoids the mathematical treatments often mistakenly identified with simulation studies.

New illustrations and references are included in the thorough revision which the author has made.
