Man, however, has constructed numerous calendars and time-measures in order to mark off its passage in longer or shorter units according to his various needs. These needs were at first entirely practical—when to plough, sow and harvest to ensure a good crop—but later he needed for intellectual reasons to understand, to account for and to improve what time-measures he used.
