His book is concerned with the plants and the vegetation communities they produce upon the various types of calcareous soils that occur in Britain, of which downland pastures, the chalk scrub, and the beechwoods, as well as the plant life of the limestones, are the most familiar inland, and the sand dunes along our coasts.

The special conditions of life which obtain in these various types of plant community are described in a manner that should appeal to the general reader interested in the countryside and its wild life, as well as to the student, since technical language is reduced to a minimum whilst the account embodies a large mass of original observations by the author and the results of experimental cultures.

The special relations between the more characteristic plants and the conditions under which they live are explained and also the changes that occur with the passage of time both in the soil and the plant covering.

The general account is accompanied by notes on the biology of the chief species and the whole work is very fully illustrated from the author's drawings and photographs.

This work had its origin in two courses of lectures delivered by Sir Edward as Fullerton Professor of the Royal Institution.
